A strange thing happens in our store where the normally intelligent being transforms into a confused and bewildered organism completely zapped of the most common of senses – similar to, but probably worse than Dorothy entering OZ. I may write to corporate headquarters and submit that the colmado be renamed the colmOZo. Not in Kansas anymore, indeed. So here she goes… some silly questions we’ve gotten lately and the silly answers we’re tempted to but do not give. (insert my frowny face)
Q 1) “What’s on the menu at the restaurant next door?”
A: All Lean Cuisine and Hungry Man TV dinners for $30. Great wine list though. Really wanna know? Walk the ten whole steps over there and look at THEIR menu.
Q 2) “How much does this cost? What about this? What about this? This? Ok, what about this?”
A: That costs a quarter.
And then the guy says, “Oh. I don’t even have a quarter.” Then why the hell are you even shopping? Clean up, aisle 1. I think that brain fart was more than just a fart.
Q 3) A statement actually, “I want to buy some wine, but I don’t want to spend any money.”
A: Are you familiar with “the atomic sit-up.” No? Perfect, then gimme a hand with this blindfold…
Q 4) “What’s up with this weather? Is it going to change soon?”
A: BEHOLD, I AM ZEUS, GREEK GOD OF ALL THINGS (seriously) AND BADASS LIGHTNING BOLT CHUCKER. I HAVE YOU IN MY CROSSHAIRS. RUN, IDIOT, RUN!!! Technically, the weather is always, always changing. Further, The Weather Channel is 240. Have at it.
Q 5) While standing in front of our t-shirt display case in the store, “Do you guys sell t-shirts?”
A: Did I miss the TSA announcement that banned more than 3oz of brains as a carry on item? Is that why you don’t have yours with you now?
Q 6) “Do you have any free rooms?”
A: No. They all cost money.
Q 7) All the lights are off and the store gate is closed, “Is the store still open?”
A: No. “Oh… Well, can I go in the store?”
Q 8) At the bar, all the lights are on, all the liquor is locked away, the music is off, and all the people have left – “Are you still open?”
A: If by open you mean, can you sit here for fourteen hours until we open again tomorrow, then, yes.
Q 9) Even more stunning – at the bar, the music is pumping, people are dancing, bartenders are mixing drinks, the dance lights are flashing, surf video on the TV, people making out in the corner – this guy comes up and asks, “Are you guys still open?”
A: Wait here. Let me go check.
Q 10) “Hey bro/dude/man, what’s up? Do you know where I can get some – you know?”
A: No I don’t. “You know?” We have Yoohoo.
Q: No, YOU KNOW?”
A: Ooooooh, riiiiiight…. Jamaica.

The DJ pants. You ain't wearin' 'em.

The DJ pants. You ain't wearin' 'em.

Not YOUR-pod. The “DJ guyPod is too drunk to take requests” sign is serious i.e. fo’ real. It’s also a nice way of saying, “If everyone wanted to hear your played-out VH1, Top 40, boy scout sing-a-long, sorority bid day, guido fist pump balogna, you’d have been hired to DJ instead of Iceland’s finest.” Let’s not forget who’s wearing the DJ pants around here. guyPod’s wearing the DJ pants, so don’t bother him while he’s working or drinking – and he’s always working or drinking, or both. He doesn’t want to let you “just take a look at what’s on the iPod.” In fact, that’s a major faux pas in Icelandic DJ culture – the equivalent of saying, “Hey, how about you watch me make out with your sister while you play Color Me Bad’s I Wanna Sex You Up for us,” and proceed to go for a tooshy squeeze on her as you wink at him. Bad move broseph, bad move. So if you want to “rock out” to the new Nickleback track, stay home, or, what the hey!, wear your own iPod out to the bar. Chicks love to see guys wear headphones in social settings. It says, “I’m a good listener,” and with Valentine’s Day coming up, your time might be better spent puttin’ out the vibe than hassling our DJ.

…we’re gay if you’re gay. Modern day translation: we’re happy if you’re happy. Sincerely. This post is a brief apology to our recent guests who found offense with the folding of our hand towels.

Our friendly and hard working housekeeping staff tries to put in that little “extra” and folds the hand towels in the shape of swans. These towels are merely an aesthetic prop to the room service. They are not “love towels,” and they are not meant to imply that the staff thinks that any particular guest is “gay” if the towels are folded as such in your room.
Further, I wouldn’t recommend using our towels, or any towel, as a “love towel.” If you interpret a swan-folded towel as being “love towel” it doesn’t obligate you to make out with your buddy. There’s a motel on the way to San Juan that advertises having a “love machine,” but we don’t have one of those yet. Anyway, don’t be angry about it, be gay! All we want is for you to be gay. If you aren’t gay, get gay! If you are already gay, be gayer! After all, you’re on vacation, right? I don’t think it’s queer to wish you were gay.
As a side note, fear of swans maybe called cygnophobia. I couldn’t find any official term for fear of towels, fear of love-towels, or fear of homosexual swans in towel form. Sorry.

Everybody knows there ain’t no party like the west coast party cuz the west coast party don’t stop, but DJ GuyPod has not been spotted around campus for quite a while. Some loyal fans are really starting to miss that guy… pod. So where has he been? Is he okay? When’s he coming back? Is he coming back? What’s his favorite flavor ice cream? What’s the next outfit going to be like? The answers to those questions in no particular order are: soon, probably, think “glam,” if I told you I’d have to kill you, we hope so, and “anything with sprinkles.”
So there you have it folks. The straight dope straight from a guy who heard it from a guy who is friends with a girl whose roommate’s bff heard it straight from the horse’s mouth (and wikipedia).

Puerto Rico Waterfalls

Puerto Rico Waterfalls

If  you are one of those adventurous types, or if the waves go flat while you are in Rincon you should visit one of the waterfalls that are close by.

Cascada is “waterfall” in Spanish. It’s actually a small waterfall, a large waterfall is a “catarata”.

Las Cataratas Waterfall in San Sebastian

Gozalandia or Las Cataratas Waterfall in San Sebastian is sometimes called the secret waterfall even though it is actually on a couple of the official Puerto Rico tourism maps. Not that secret after all!

Located in the town of San Sebastian, this waterfall is pretty awesome. Not only is the waterfall pretty tall (around 50 feet), it was also kind of wide (around 20-30 feet). There was a pool at the bottom of the falls that people swim in that was deep and clean. This beauty has even been in a few movies (most recently “A Perfect Getaway”)!

The pool is deep enough that, some people jump off of the rocks into the water. There is also a small underwater “cave” on the right of the waterfall that people swim into. There is a good-sized secret air pocket above it where one can surface and breathe. I have seen pictures where a couple of people fit inside there.

How to get there

Take the 2 towards San Juan. Take the Route 111 exit in San Sebastian, then turn north onto Route 446. Take this a short way until you see a large bridge on the right. Turn right, go across the bridge and drive up the road about 0.8 miles. There is a house on the right side of road that has a large “metal hanger” building. Right around that area, you can park on the side of the road. There is a fence with a small opening that is locked closed with a chain. This is the trail enterance.

Now, pay attention — you have to cross private property to get to it. So be respectful and don’t litter or act like an donkey.

Go under/over a locked chain holding a gate mostly closed. Then follow the muddy, narrow foot-path down through the cow field. Look out for the bulls in the field, in most cases they are more scared of you.

Keep following the path downhill, and by the man-made pond with pavilion around it.

Keep walking down the path (at this point much wider) into the forest — and listen becasue you should be able to hear the river and falls below. Look for a path that will lead you down below the falls (should be to the left). The path is well-used and even has some safety poles and ropes to help you get down the slippery slope to the falls. This whole trip takes maybe 10-15 slippery minutes on the way down.

Surfing Rincon

Surfing Tres Palmas Rincon Puerto Rico

With its crystalline blue water, gentle trade winds blowing offshore on the northwest coast, palm trees swaying over white sand beaches, and hundreds of reefs, points and beaches, it’s almost surprising that surfing didn’t really start in Puerto Rico until the late ’50s. Indeed, the traditional wintertime Puerto Rico pilgrimage is still the first place many East Coasters get their first taste of powerful surf. (Other names for Puerto Rico include Borinquen, and La Isla del Encanto.)

Surfing in Rincon Puerto Rico

CROWDS

In a word: yes. Most all surf spots in Puerto Rico have a cadre of local and expat surfers — and bodyboarders — who are on it when conditions are good and/or on weekends and holidays. The only chance you’ll be surfing alone is if you find an out-of-the-way spot, of which there are many and some quite good. But many of the best and most accessible ones are spoken for — and some rather loudly.

HAZARDS

Sure, cabrón: Sea urchins, sharp, shallow reef, jellyfish and strong currents are the most common threats; sharks are out there but most locals don’t pay ‘em any mind and there’s never been a shark attack on a surfer. There’s the annoying little “pichu-pichu”, like sea lice that pinches your skin and can cause a rash all over your body — but most of the time, you’re too busy with the surf to pay attention to such trifling matters. Sticky fingers. Keep a close eye on your things.

THE SEASONS

SUMMER
School and Colleges are out — and so is the swell, usually. July-November is hurricane season, sure, but they’re pretty fickle through the dog days of summer, when the water temps reach 85 and air temps vary between the high 80s and low 100s. Most people are just searching for shade or an occasional wave from a passing South American Cold Front or tropical wave on the South Shore.

FALL
Time to get your quiver ready. Steady North Atlantic storms start kicking into gear in late September; the super-deep Puerto Rican trench amplifies the resulting north swells, which brings consistent — not giant — surf to the North Shore of the Atlantic.

WINTER
This is when surfers from all over the world (though mainly East Coasters) make their pilgrimage to the juice. November through February sees a near constant string of low-pressure systems off the Eastern Seaboard, most of which generate some kind of surf for PR — some of it quite large, too.

SPRING
This can be a time for the beloved vientos alisios (offshore winds). It’s a time of transition, and while swells aren’t as bomber as wintertime, they can be reasonably consistent and fun, in the shoulder- to head-high zone with the occasional overhead swell, even into May.

Tres Palmas Marine Reseverve
Get off you ass and pick up some snorkel gear so you can check out some of the most amazing sights that Rincon has to offer under the water at the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve. See hundreds of different types of reef fish along with sea trutles in their natural habitat. Also enjoy the different colors and shapes of coral over the reef’s. Be sure to keep your hands off of the goods. Don’t be a kook and go picking stuff up and shoving them into your dive bag, this is a marine reserve which means you leave it as is. This way others can enjoy for years to come.

The Tres Palmas Marine Reserve, created in 2004, was established to protect some of Puerto Rico’s rich marine biodiversity for future generations.
By keeping marine areas in a natural state, free from potentially damaging human activities, these environments will be protected for the future. Rinconeños will also benefit from the positive effects that this protection will have on recreation and tourism, community education and scientific research.
